Real Women
Most of you will have seen the headlines generated by a certain German woman’s magazine and their descision to use “Real Women” as models from now on.
The theory goes that size zero models perpetuate an unhealthy ideal for people to aspire to. But in a world where obesity is a bigger killer than anorexia, I have to question the logic here.
While it’s pretty obvious that no one is going to use obese models, people tend to compare their own merits relatively. So while size zero models are on the catwalks and in fashion magazines, most people will look at them and think “well, I’m not size zero, but I’m not that far off.”
But if you up the size of the models, I think you’ll be upping peoples perceptions of what is a healthy size.
I also wonder why it’s unacceptable to criticize people for being too fat, but it’s open season on people who are “too thin”. It’s a double standard if ever I saw one.
