The phrase is “I could not care less”. The emphasis is on the ‘not’. The phrase implies that the subject/object/person or thing holds absolutely no interest for the speaker. Hence, they could not care any less about it, because it’s the thing they care least about in the world.
However, I’m increasingly seeing the phrase “I could care less” which makes no sense at all. It leaves the listener with no clue as to how much the speaker cares about a particular subject/object/person or thing. They may care about it a lot, or they could care very little about it. Either way, the phrase implies that there is always something they could care about less, rendering the phrase useless.
This is mainly an American problem, and while I’m all for adopting American standards (Color instead of Colour, Center instead of Centre, fosset instead of…. um… whatever the fuck a fosset is), I refuse to accept words that make no sense, or words that have been changed simply because our American cousins are too lazy to use their own spellcheck. Which brings me to two words a friend once pointed out that Americans tend to fuck up all the time.
‘Addicting’ and ‘Legos’.
Neither of which are words. It’s Addictive, and Lego.
I’m issuing a warning now. If I ever hear the sentence “I could care less about how addicting Legos are” I will shoot the person in the face.
